What is Calendula Flower Extract?
Calendula officinalis, commonly known as marigold, is a widespread crop and is an ornamental plant. It is a versatile plant that can be grown in any sunny location on almost any soil. Calendula extract contains mono, sesquiterpenes, triterpenes, phenolic acids, flavonoids, tannins and carotenoids, to name just a few of the most important. Calendula or marigold is traditionally used for medicinal purposes, but also has cosmetic benefits.
What are the benefits?
It is mainly used as an anti-aging agent because of the carotenes, triterpenes, flavonoids and polysaccharides, which all affect glycoprotein and collagen metabolism. The metabolic changes in the duo lead to an accelerated wound healing effect on the skin. It is also known for its antimicrobial effect. For this effect, marigolds were used in the past for healing and remedial purposes. Mucilage and saponins in calendula provide a moisturizing effect that can be used for dry skin. It has effective soothing properties for irritated and sensitive skin.
What are the common uses?
The edible flower Calendula can be used on its own or to make ointments, creams, or salves. It can also be processed into a tincture, tea, and capsules. Yellow dye has also been extracted from the flower and used to color fabrics and foods.
Who is it good for?
Calendula Flower Extract has great benefits on all skin types. However, because of the calming and healing effects it is perfect for really dry, sensitive or irritated skin. That's why Calendula is an ingredient in most baby products because it's really gentle to the skin.
Are there any side effects?
Calendula is generally safe to use, but there are a few considerations to keep in mind. If you are allergic to ragweed, daisies, marigold, or flowers in the Asteraceae family, it’s probably best to skip as it could lead to an allergic reaction. Also important to note: doctors recommend opting out if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Ingesting calendula may impact your hormone levels or even induce menstruation. If you’re unsure about any of the above, check with your healthcare provider before incorporating calendula into your regular routine.
